Creation of a Community Sports Centre in the Municipal Building
Dear Madame Mayor and Councillors:

The undersigned believe that the time has come to create in Town of Mount Royal an interior community sports centre in the municipal building located at 5 Montgomery Avenue, situated to the East of the municipal swimming pool.

The latest study on physical activity of our youth by the Canadian government shows that one-quarter of Canadians ages 2 to 17 are overweight or suffer from obesity. Young people have never been so inactive! The most serious warnings predict the possibility that today’s children could become the first generation where life expectancy shall be lower than that of their parents.

Their parents, that’s us! We have the responsibility to respond by proposing action to the maximum of our capabilities.

The creation of an interior community sports centre in the municipal building located at 5 Montgomery Avenue, which could be open to all Town of Mount Royal residents 12 months per year, would promote a benevolent culture under the guidance of existing TMR sports committees.

We propose a programme of intergenerational activities that would gel the enthusiasm of citizens of all ages.

We already have a positive subscription to the existing sporting activities offered in TMR. In the summer of 2007, the TMR House-League Soccer Committee conducted an opinion poll, in which almost 400 parents responded by saying they would register their children for an indoor soccer activity. We can only imagine that these parents would be interested in having their children involved in other sporting programs, such as gymnastics, volleyball, badminton, street hockey, etc.

The signatories to this letter would like to meet with the members of the Town of Mount Royal Council, so as to discuss this project. We believe an interior community sports centre is an emblematic and visionary project, which would blend into the Centenary of our municipality.

Yours truly,

Jocelyn Langlois et Marc Lefrançois, Town of Mount Royal residents
